Alewife are native to Atlantic Slope drainages, with populations being reported as far south as South Carolina. Alewife have been introduced into the Coosa drainage in Georgia and non-native populations are also known from the Tennessee drainage in other states.

In Georgia, occurs in the Coosa River basins.
