Order Description

Anseriformes

Order Description

The Order Anseriformes contains two families, 48 genera and 160 plus species. In Georgia, one family and around 40 species of birds are found.

These birds (mostly ducks, geese, swans) generally have broad bills, long necks, and webbed feet with a slightly elevated hind toe. Most feed on the water (dabbling or diving) although geese and swans will also graze on land. The diet is varied, ranging from fish to vegetation. Swans and geese generally pair for life and have similar plumage. Most ducks do not pair for life and the sexes have very different plumage during breeding season. Generally anywhere from four to fourteen eggs may be laid which hatch precocial young. It should be noted that some waterfowl have been domesticated over 4000 years.
